So I haven’t posted pics in a while, and one of my friends (who shall remain nameless) is a nag so here is the most recent installment of Project 365. If you click on any of the pics it will enlarge it (and you could potentially just go through the gallery that way). Once enlarged you may click on to go to the flickr page where I’ve included the description
The 2009 TED conference recently concluded, and I’ve been slowly looking at some of the video. The video embedded below is of Jose Abreu. Abreu founded a youth Orchestra called El Sistema (The System) that has transformed the lives of many Venezuelan children. He’s also the winner of this year’s TEDPrize
I would love to take a similar idea and adapt it to rural Jamaica. Quite frankly, it’s probably something that would work pretty well on the East Side of St. Paul, or in North Minneapolis.
The question of heaven is a tricky one, particularly for those who see the injustice of all sorts happening in this world, and feel the calling to fight against it. The image of heaven as this place somewhere beyond where the cares of the world fade away, that is our ultimate home. And of earth as a place that we’re “just passing through” appears to be in opposition to the way that God has shown his concern for earthly justice, and the welfare of people on earth.
On the other hand, other Christians see the injustice of the world and realize the chronic spiritual brokenness of this planet that’s behind it. Spiritual problems need spiritual cures, and the cure for this one will happen when Christ returns and makes a new place for us to be. The place often referred to (accurately or not) as heaven, and while we are supposed to do good in the world, trying to make heaven on earth is going to ultimately be a futile gesture.
There is a tension between these two positions, but I think that these views are not opposed. So if you’ll bear with me, I think I’ll break this post up into three, this introduction, a section that talks about my understanding of the Kingdom of God, and finally my understanding of redemption and how it fits into this.
And for all those who are impatient, I’m hoping to intersperse these with some project365 stuff as well.
So sadly, this update contains my first (and hopefully my only) missed day of project 365. I’m still going to continue though. So here are my photos, and I’ll talk about Breakaway too. As usual, click the pictures to enlarge and then click on the little icon to go to it’s Flickr page. Or you can follow my Project365 set on Flickr
And here, on January 28, I missed a day. It was a crazy day of working for half the day, and then traveling to Brainerd for the North Central InterVarsity‘s Regional Winter Conference, BreakAway. This year we had 11 students from Hamline and somewhere between 260 and 300 students overall.
I was assigned to two electives, Transform your Dorm. Which was all about sharing Christ in your dorm and among your friends. The picture above is our room setup (well before students arrived).
I was also pretty impressed with our speaker this week. His name is Chris Nichols and he’s the regional director for the New England region. He was a good speaker and I think it connected well with the students.
The second elective I worked with was the Justice elective. It was pretty awesome. This is a picture of one of the articles that was posted along the wall (collected over a week I think) of various justice/injustice related news items.
The rest of this is regular Project365 stuff, feel free to check out the descriptions on Flickr.
