Cowardly Lion – Last of the Oz Series

Filed under: Art — RichieDaley @ 11:50 am

So I finally did the Cowardly Lion. It wasn’t as hard as I feared it would be, although I would admit to cheating in two ways. Firstly the shadow over the face is a major cheat, but it’s also a major cheat that helped with the idea I was trying to convey. The second I’m not sure is a cheat, I left my pencil home by accident when I had already started this drawing, so I decided to do it all with the brushpen. I think it came out pretty well. This Oz series seemed to become more an excercise in page design and composition than my usual sketches in this book. So, I hope you have enjoyed this little diversion. I’ll probably go back to normal sketching now, unless someone eally really want’s a Glinda in which case, you may need help, but I would probably humour your insanity.

The Tin Man and the Scarecrow

Filed under: Art — RichieDaley @ 1:37 am

So I think that the Tin Man picture is better designed while the Scarecrow picture is better drawn. It took me a while to figure out what to do with the latter actually. Particularly with the background and title. The Tin Man image came to me almost immediately. The hardest thing with both of these images was the different and subtle foreshortening, like the Tin Man’s head or the Scarecrow’s left arm and his legs. Still I like these.

I still have to do the Cowardly Lion. I think that may be hard. Anyway, I hope you enjoy.

The Wicked Witch Of The West And A Flying Monkey

Filed under: Art — RichieDaley @ 6:16 pm

As Promised, here are some character sketches from the Wizard of Oz.

I didn’t go too crazy with the designs, my Wicked Witch of the East (apparently her name is Elphaba) looks older and more wrinkly than the movie version. The monkey is about the same. It was hard for me to draw the monkey, as you can probably tell by the amount of pencil smudge on that page. I think it came out well though. There’s some anatomy issues, but that’s mostly because I drew the monkey without reference (and don’t even ask about the uniform).

I think I see this turning into a series. I’ve already started on the Tinman. I had a pretty solid idea of what I wanted to do for him. The Cowardly Lion is going to be harder, being non-human. Scarecrow will be fun. So keep checking back (or you know, subscribe to the RSS feed so you are notified when I update using your particular reader of choice)

Characters, Designs and Sketches

Filed under: Art — RichieDaley @ 11:59 pm

I’m sorry I’ve been so long in posting. I’ve had a great lapse in confidence in my drawing skills, but now I’m back to my delusions-of-granduer-toting self and am ready to post some art.

Not much to say about these. Two attempted sketches of characters in a story that I’m writing. They are very early sketches, and will definitely be tweaked.

Untitled-35.jpg
I’m linking to this second one because there is a bit of nudity. I was going to do this very elaborate nature thing with a little bit of Adam and Eve vibe, but I never really got around to doing it all. you can probably tell by the look of the drawing, but this was a lot slower and more meticulous art than I usually do in this sketchbook. And I had to get back to work at some point didn’t I ;-)

On the left of this one you have more attempts at designing the detective. I swear this guy is going to kill me. I have some sort of detective block on him. Anyway, On the right you have me working out my Storm redesign a little bit. This is a better drawing, but I’m not sure it’s what I meant. You should check out some of Igor Kordey’s work with Storm. He goes in a similar direction as I wanted to.

And a teaser for next post. I’m taking on at least one character from the Wizard of Oz. I have a friend who hate’s any interpretation of the characters that are not completely in line with the movie. So let’s see what he thinks about it. Hopefully I’ll have that posted by the end of the week. I hope to see you then. Sketches and Scribbles and Spiderman and Robin

Filed under: Art — RichieDaley @ 7:14 pm

Hey all,

Got two sets of sketches up for you, so I’m going to just jump right in.

So here’s a page of me messing around. I’m still having a lot of trouble designing the detective. I can’t seem to do anything decent that isn’t a direct rip off of Slam Bradley. I may have to resort to celebrity casting (ie finding a celebrity and using him as the model). Notable on this page is the fact that I’ve finally gotten Spiderman’s eyes to work. This is a milestone, and may mean more Spiderman in the future as I’ve been inspired by Mike Wieringo’s blog.

This second one I did when I lost my pencil midway through the Robin sketch. I realized that I had no images of him fighting, and wouldn’t really know what one looked like. So yeah, due to a lack of decent scketching, what was supposed to be a gut punch looks more like a groin punch. On the other hand, I very much like what I ended up doing on the thug’s clothing. I sort of flip-flopped between Robin I and Robin III costumes, so what I’ve got going on here is a confused muddle. Not my best work, but there’s still some good things there.
